Stuttgart and Tbingen - J. G. Cotta'sche Buchhandlung, 1837 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Das Lied von der Glocke (The Song of the Bell) is a poem that the German poet Friedrich Schiller published in 1798. This edition is illustrated with forty-three engraved line drawings by Moritz Retzsch. Das Lied von der Glocke is one of the most famous poems of German literature and with 430 lines also one of the longest. In it, Schiller combines a knowledgeable technical description of a bell founding with points of view and comments on human life, its possibilities and risks. Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (1759 - 1805) was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright. During the last seventeen years of his life (1788 - 1805), Schiller struck up a productive, if complicated, friendship with already famous and influential Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics, and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works he left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. They also worked together on Xenien, a collection of short satirical poems in which both Schiller and Goethe challenge opponents to their philosophical vision. Friedrich August Moritz Retzsch (1779 -1857) was a German painter, draughtsman, and etcher. The Cotta publishing house commissioned illustrations for Johann Wolfgang Goethe's Faust, which made him financially independent. Goethe liked his work, and he illustrated works by other famous authors, most notably Friedrich Schiller's Lied von der Glocke, a Shakespeare Gallery, and Brger's Ballads. He also did oil paintings on classical subjects, and portraits. Previous owner's ink inscription dated 1875 to front free endpaper. Condition: In a cloth binding. Externally, generally smart but with slight wear to extremities and marks, in particularto front board. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and plates generally clean but with foxing to pages of text. Overall: VERY GOOD.
