About This Item
Garden City: American Masterpiece Library. Hardcover_cloth. Collectible - Near Fine. 5.75"x8.5". 492 pp. Navy cloth boards w/gilt on front and spine. Rust paper w/feather and stars as paste downs. B&W sketch of Harriet Stowe as frontispiece. Typography, endpapers, and binding designed by Warren Chappell. Yellow silk ribbon. Spine straight, binding tight, pages clean and bright. Not x-library, PON on fep. In Brodart mylar. The narrative drive of Stowe's classic novel is often overlooked in the heat of the controversies surrounding its anti-slavery sentiments. In fact, it is a compelling adventure story with richly drawn characters and has earned a place in both literary and American history. Stowe's puritanical religious beliefs show up in the novel's final, overarching theme—the exploration of the nature of Christianity and how Christian theology is fundamentally incompatible with slavery.
