About This Item
Enitharmon Press, London., 1969. First edition. Quarto. A selection made by the author's widow from his unpublished manuscripts. Three-page Introduction by Kathleen Raine. 32 pages. Leather-backed boards covered with paper simulating wood texture and with gilt design by Brenda Chamberlain on front. The endpaper designs are also by Brenda Chamberlain. Printed at the Daedalus Press, Stoke Ferry.Out of a total edition of 300 copies this is Copy A reserved for Gwen Watkins. Signed by Kathleen Raine on the limitation page. Laid in is Raine's original typescript of her introduction, with a number of corrections in her hand. Also, three signed letters from Raine to Gwen Watkins, two of which are typewritten on Temenos letterhead, dated Sept. 25th and Oct. 2nd, the third being handwritten and dated Oct. 24th. The first letter (about 450 words) contains mostly a request to publish Vernon Watkins' writings on W.B. Yeats. The second letter (about 500 words) continues in this vein, but also touches on Raine's family. The handwritten letter (about 250 words) goes deeper into Raine's family problems. Two of the original mailing envelopes are present. The paper strips of simulated veneer are starting to lift from the boards. Very good.
