About This Item
London: Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley, 1830. viii, 272pp. With half-title and errata. Uncut in original publisher's cloth-backed paper boards, paper lettering-piece. Rubbed, with short split to upper joint, some marking to spine and boards, a little soiling to endpapers The second published collection of verse by Caroline Norton, the Hon. Mrs George Chapple (1808-77). The daughter of colonial civil servant Thomas Sheridan and minor novelist Caroline Callander, Norton showed early signs of a literary talent which an abusive marriage and her husband's slow-wit later encouraged her into. The title poem is based on the tale of the Wandering Jew; other pieces in this collection include 'The Captive Pirate' and 'The Arab's farewell to his horse'. As with her first collection, the work met with commercial success and a second edition followed in the same year. Jackson p. 557. Jackson, Romantic poetry by Women p.244.. First edition. 8vo.

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.
Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.
We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.
We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
