All volumes have light damp staining to fore edge. Dust jackets are price clipped, sunned at spine and edges, and have light damp staining, a few short tears, bumping to edges and corners. Rashdall's famous book, which, though it has long been out of print, is still widely read and in constant demand, was published in 1895. Since its publication much work has been done on the history of medieval universities and of academic thought. It has been the aim of the editors of the new edition to give readers information about the new literature and, so far as possible, to indicate how far it affects the description and arguments in Rashdall's book. Sir Maurice Powicke is responsibe for the revision of the two volumes on the continental universities, Mr. Emden for that of the sections on Oxford and Cambridge.
