About This Item
[Ann Arbor, Mi: October 23, 1940. Very good.. [4]pp. on a single folded sheet. Light wear, several contemporary ink emendations. A rare program for a concert presented by the University Musical Society at the University of Michigan featuring famed African American contralto singer Marian Anderson. The first page prints the songs sung by Anderson, which included her normal selection of classical pieces by Handel, Carissimi, Schubert, and Bellini, and "Negro Spirituals" arranged by Burleigh, Boatner, and Brown. The internal two-page spread prints the lyrics for the songs. An attendee of the concert has made a handful of ink corrections to the program, crossing out and replacing a song title, adding two additional spirituals ("The City I'm Bound For" and "The Beautiful City"), and nixing an entire section of classical songs then adding the words, "South American Songs" in their place. These were all very likely last-minute changes made by Anderson and her team, and probably announced prior to the concert. No copies listed individually in OCLC, though some small number probably reside in archival collections of music ephemera.
