During his career Gates was an editor of book reviews at the Lincoln Herald, a member of the Civil War Round Table of New York, and contributed material to a plethora of books and anthologies on his historical specialties. Gates also collected autographs from authors for much of his life, and had correspondence with several of them, including Andre Norton. A fascinating association copy of Catton's fifth book, a biography covering U.S. Grant's career in the military and as a president of the United States. A Very Good book with a former owner's name, city, and date written on the front pastedown (obscured by the front flap of the dust jacket) with minor bumping to the corners in a Very Good dust jacket with a few traces of edge wear and faint toning to the spine panel.
