This naval 19th c. American, color lithograph showing the U.S. Harbor & River Monitor, Tippe Canoe Class Civil War Monitor under steam power, its American flag and banner straight out in the breeze, has a manuscript dedication in black ink as follows:"Presented to William Macpherson Horner by his friend Capt. In the lower margin of the lithograph, below the title of the print is additional information about the dimensions of the monitor, details about its engine and other technical matters. This print is in institutional collections. Please see the Boston Athenaeum collection.
William MacPherson Horner Jr., the author of Philadelphia Furniture 1682-1807, published in 1935 may be the son of the person to whom the Monitor print is dedicated by Capt. Gustavus Vasa Fox. The author Macpherson Horner Jr. is descended from a prominent Philadelphia family established by William Macpherson (1756-1813) who served in many roles in the American Revolutionary War and founding of the country. The author William MacPherson Horner, Jr. was married to Marian Carson, a lifelong collector of antiques. This book is a catalogue of her collection which was purchased in the 1990's by the Library of Congress.2/
Further research is needed to establish the precise family relationships and provenance.
Notes:
1. Gustavus Vasa Fox (1821-1883) was a Massachusetts native. His appointment as Asst. Secretary of the Navy came under the administration of President Lincoln. In this role, Fox recommended use in the Civil War of the ironclad Monitor. https://www.tulane.edu/~sumter/Fox.html
