See Coyle, OHIO AUTHORS AND THEIR BOOKS: Brannan, 1825-1865, a self-educated poet and painter, was born in Cincinnati, and was raised on a nearby farm. He operated a portrait studio in Cincinnati and for a time in Chicago and Louisville. His poems and humorous prose sketches, most of them published under the pen name VanDyke Browne, appeared in leading periodicals. His burlesque sermon THE HARP OF A THOUSAND STRINGS, was widely popular with amateur and professional elocutionists. He died in Cincinnati..
