London: Reeves and Turner, 1881. First Edition. Cloth. Near Fine/None. 12mo, dark green cloth with gold letternig and bands on spine, brown-coated endpapers, vviii + 184 pages + 8pp. of Ads. James Thomson (1834 - 1882), who wrote under the pseudonym "Bysshe Vanolis" (from poets Percy Bysshe Shelley and Novalis), was a Scottish Victorian-era poet famous primarily for the long poem The City of Dreadful Night (1874), an expression of bleak pessimism in a dehumanized, uncaring urban environment. SCARCE title. Bookplate on front pastedown. Very light foxing. Previous owner's name in red pencil on half title.
