About This Item

London: Vanity Fair, 1880. A Victorian "art album" with 44 colour lithographs from Vanity fair tipped in to the left page. Opposite each, the biographical details by Jehu Jr is also tipped in. (Vanity Fair was founded by Thomas Gibson Bowles, AKA Jehu Junior, in 1868). The subjects are largely politicians (British and Irish) members of the aristocracy and military men. Beautiful caricatures by Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy" Carlo Pellegrini or "Ape", "T". The album itself is decorated and embossed in black and gilt on a green cloth base. The outside of the album is in good clean condition. Inside, there is darkening and old foxing to the end papers, and the pages are darkened and a little brittle to the stiff art card, but the text and lithographs are in very good condition. 380 x 330 mm (15 x 13 inches). The list of those caricatured with biography is: Marquis of Ailesbury; Earl of Winchilsea and Nottingham; Leonard Henry Courtney MP; Henry Richard MP; Frank Hugh O'Cahan O'Donnell MP; James Russell Lowell; Sir Charles John Forbes, Baronet of Newe; John Eldon Gorst MP; Colonel Lewis Guy Phillips, Grenadier Guards; Sir William Alexander Gordon Cumming, Bart; David Plunket MP; Baron Henry de Worms MP; Henry G. Calcraft; Lord Ardilaun; Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier; Lieut-Colonel Henry Stracey, Scots Guards; Lord Headley; Lord Inverurie; Markham Spofforth; Edward Clarke MP; Colonel James Keith Fraser; Commander Lord Ramsay R.N.; Charles, Cunningham Boycott; Sir Richard Temple, Bart; Joseph Edgar Boehm; Francis C. Burnand; Sir Bache Edward Cunard, Bart; Lieutenant Colonel Charles George Gordon (Chinese Gordon); Morgan Howard Q.C.; Sir Farrer Herschell MP; Marquis of Hamilton; Earl of Kenmare; William Lehman Ashmead Burdett-Coutts Bartlett; Lord Waveney; Right Reverend John Charles Ryle, Bishop of Liverpool; Marquis of Exeter; Duke of Montrose; Lord Haldon; Lord Penrhyn; Charles Robert Spence MP; Vice-Admiral Sir John Edmund Commerell; Earl of Leven and Melville; Lord Robartes; Earl of Munster. 380 by 330mm (15 by 13 inches). . 380 x 330 mm (15 x 13 pouces). La liste des personnes caricaturées avec leur biographie est la suivante : Marquis d'Ailesbury ; comte de Winchilsea et Nottingham ; Leonard Henry Courtney MP ; Henry Richard MP ; Frank Hugh O'Cahan O'Donnell MP ; James Russell Lowell ; Sir Charles John Forbes, Baronet of Newe ; John Eldon Gorst MP ; Colonel Lewis Guy Phillips, Grenadier Guards ; Sir William Alexander Gordon Cumming, Bart ; David Plunket MP ; Baron Henry de Worms MP ; Henry G.
