Translated by Herbert Grimsditch. 16mo. xi, 135pp. Sixteen full-page miniature illustrations by Valenti Angelo, heightened in gold by hand. Hand-set type. Full rust morocco stamped in gilt with an arabesque pattern. Lacking slipcase. A fine and clean copy. William Beckford's Arabian Nights-inspired fantasia was first published in 1786. This translation by Herbert Grimsditch was first published in 1929 for the Nonesuch Press. This edition includes the same introduction by Grimsditch.. Illus. by Angelo, Valenti.

Synopsis

Vathek (alternatively titled Vathek, an Arabian Tale or The History of the Caliph Vathek) is a Gothic novel written by William Thomas Beckford. It was composed in French beginning in 1782, and then translated into English by Reverend Samuel Henley in which form it was first published in 1786 without Beckford's name as An Arabian Tale, From an Unpublished Manuscript, claiming to be translated directly from Arabic. The first French edition was published in 1787.

The Argonaut was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers\' Association of America and has been a member in good standing ever since. The Shop is now located just three blocks from Union Square in downtown San Francisco and is open six days a week. Parking facilities include ample street space and a parking garage close by.
