About This Item
London: I B Tauris & Co Ltd, 1991. Book. Good. Soft cover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Large trade paperback. 275 pages. Bibliography. Selected and introduced by Judy Mabro. First edition. An examination of European 'travel literature' specifically focused on Middle Eastern women. The biases and prejudices of the writers are manifest, but those attitudes also reflected as much upon the roles of women in European society as they did upon the romanticized image of the exotic and immoral Arab female. By 20th century standards a shocking exercise in jingoism and misogyny, but also a readable, if wryly amusing, narrative. Previous owner's name written inside front cover. Covers show cosmetic wear to extremities and spine creased from reading. A sound, tight. internally clean and unmarked copy. Good. .
