About This Item

Third Press, 1970. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Very Good/Good. Sadock, Verna. Quite scarce in any condition, this is a unique insider's view of the trial of the Chicago 8 (Bobby Seale, Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, John Froines, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, & David Dellinger, & Lee Weiner), for their participation in the riots surrounding the 1968 Democratic National Convention in that city. Told in words & pictures, including actual trial transcripts & text written by an African-American engineer-dramatist, complemented with over 200+ pen-and-ink sketches drawn daily throughout the trial proceedings by a local sketch artist. Dedicated by the publishers to "the disillusioned young American who, loving life, and loving his country, nurtures an ailing dream.and looks for a hero to save the country from disaster" the text extols the value of free speech & our First Amendment right, which the judge in the case was widely seen as blatantly quashing. From the library of a Stanford graduate, activist, & founding chair of the Theatre Dept at UC Davis (with his stamp to ffep, no other markings), this is the First Printing of the First Edition from 1970, in 159 pages. With brick red cloth-covered boards stamped in glossy red lettering to front & spine, this hardcover 4to is in VG- condition: completely clean, binding strong & straight, pages white & unmarked. Mild dampstain to top edge of both boards, which has caused slight rippling (but no discoloration) to top edges of all pages as well. The unclipped DJ (with orig. $7.95 rice intact) is only Good, with dampstaining to top edge, chipping to bottom, rubbing to extremities; nicely protected in new mylar cover Free! Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same Day Shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Weekdays (Pacific); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day. Sorry; book is too large for expedited or international shipping due to postage costs.
