About This Item

[Various locations, including New York and Mexico, 1920. Very good.. [42] leaves, illustrated with 302 photographs between 1.25 x 1.25 inches and 5.25 x 3.25 inches. Oblong quarto. Contemporary limp green cloth photograph album. Spine mostly separated along rear joint, scuffed and word around edges. A handful of images slightly faded, some with minor wear. A small sticker on the front cover reads in manuscript, "Browns and Pritchards late 1800s early 1900s." A wide-ranging collection of personal photographs assembled at the turn of the 20th century by a member of the Brown-Pritchard family of Newburgh, New York. The first several pages are populated with homefront portraits of the family, with a few scattered manuscript captions providing the names of the subjects, namely Ethel Pritchard, Mary E. Pritchard, Alice Cashman, Uncle Arthur & Arthur Brown, Aunt Mary Brown, E.P. Brown, and so forth. About a third of the way into the album, the scene shifts to Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico in 1911-12, likely where someone in the family worked or had an interest in the mining industry, as several shots feature a mine and its surroundings. Several images feature well-clad men, women, and children amongst the mining areas. Other photos in this section feature Chinese workers, native Mexican laborers, local women, the railroad, a festival, a market scene, and more. A handful of photos near the end of this section feature what appear to be Mexican revolutionaries posed on horseback or on the street brandishing their weaponry. The remainder of the album features scenes in Michigan, Quebec, and Arizona, featuring additional mining scenes as well as images of the natural wonders of each location. An eclectic collection of family photographs documenting uncommon mining locations in early-20th century western America and Canada.
