London: Burns, Oates, & Co., 1869. xv, [1], 368pp. Bound by Margotti in contemporary gilt-ruled tree-calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, T.E.G. Worn, with loss, joints split, large portion of spine missing at foot. Marbled endpapers, newspaper clipping relating to Newman pasted to verso of FFEP, scattered spotting. Inked inscription to half-title: 'To E. Ryley Esq / with the kind regards / of the author / Jany. 21. 1875', with later inked gift inscription beneath: 'To my niece / M. K. Fisher / E. R. / Jany. 21. 1886'. A presentation copy of the revised and expanded edition of a collection of 152 devotional poems and hymns by theologian and cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1890), including the first appearance in book form of his celebrated composition The Dream of Gerontius. A second edition, with a further eight poems included, appeared later the same year. The E. Ryley to whom this copy was presented is likely the sculptor Edward Ryley (1812-1896) who produced a bust of Newman in 1884. . Third edition. 8vo.
