"When Vertue XXXV crossed the Atlantic Ocean from east to west she was one of the smallest vessels ever to have done so. Humphrey Barton and his one companion undertook this adventure partly to satisfy an inborn urge to challenge the 'Western Ocean', partly with the object of earning dollars. His description of the hurricane which struck Vertue XXXV when almost on the last lap shows by how small a margin their purpose was achieved. In this book lies the vivid record not only of the voyage itself but of the expert technique and life-long experience which went into every detail of the boat and her equipment." - from dust-jacket blurb. Series: The Mariners Library, #31. .
