Vestigia Insulae Manniae Antiquiora, or, A Dissertation on the Armorial Bearings of the Isle of Man, the Regalities and Prerogatives of its Ancient Kings, and the Original Usages, Customs, Privileges, Laws, and Constitutional Government of the Manx People." Publication number V of The Manx Society for Publication of National Documents & one of only 310 copies printed; pre-title page of Manx Society giving date established (1858), logo, volume number, & date of publication, followed by list of officers of the society. Two full-page frontis. plates in colour showing the seals of Harald, King of Mann in A. D. 1246 & A. D. Circa 1245. Contents list & list of plates followed by preliminary observations; Chapter 1 - The Armorial Bearings of the Isle of Man; Chapter 2 - Ancient Remains of Earthworks and Largo Stones in the Isle of Man; Chapter 3 - Regalities and Constitution of the Isle of Man. The lengthy appendix at the rear of the book gives extracts to exemplify & corroborate the text & this is followed by the index & eight pages of b/w. plates. A small postscript follows this explaining that when the pages were at the press the plate numbers were incorrectly printed as numbering 1 to 6, 8, & 9. The plates are all present but that listed as 7 in the front of the book appears as 8, & 8 as 9. On the last page is a corrigenda. Binder's small label inside rear cover. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 218 + pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Foxing to rear pages (including last two plates), but body of book mostly clean and unfoxed. . inside front cover is the bookplate of Samuel Simpson, probably the Rev. Samuel Simpson who was chaplain at the Church of St Thomas, Douglas in 1851.. Gilt titles spine with gilt Manx coat of arms within blind-stamped decorative borders front & rear covers. small (damp?) stain to top inner corner (margin) of plates pages, not affecting illustrations. brown cloth. No dust jacket. Re-bound by library. 8vo. Green cloth-bound book with a sunned spine that has gilt lettering. Age-toned. Waterstain at top corners of pages 3-4 and a grey waterstain covering the last nine pages in the top left corner. There are dark brown marks throughout. Printed for the Manx Society, 1860. Hardcover. Acceptable. This book appears to have been rebound in green cloth boards and spine and is ex-library. cover has some marks but is firm. Interior is age tanned, corner of page 101 is missing. Pencil to front end papers. Library ticker holder stuck to inside back cover. Text and illustrations have occassional foxing but clear.
