Atlas Geographus., c1730. An interesting and decorative map showing Europe, Asia and northern Africa surrounded by eight compass points worth of windheads, most likely by Christophorus Cellarius. The title translates to "Old World Climates according to Strabo". Strabo was a renowned geographical scholar who lived between c.63 B.C. and c.23 A.D. Of particular interest is 'Aquilo,' the north wind, characterized as a winged dog held in check by a chain leash, grasped by a Neptune-like figure seated on an immense, hollowed out rock at the North Pole. Behind barred openings in the rock are more chained creatures, possibly representing frigid storms waiting to be released at the whim of the gods. Copper engraving. Later colour. Fine condition Size: 46 x 31 cm.
