In Latin. 1643 Apud Joannem Kinckium (Cologne, Germany), 2 3/8 x 4 3/8 inches tall full leather bound, five raised bands and gilt-lettered label to spine, all page edges gilt, ribbon marker sewn in, gilt dentelles to board edges and framing front and rear pastedowns, gilt floral patterned endpapers, illustrated with four full-page engravings of religious scenes, 402, [6] pp. Slight to moderate staining, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with bumping to tips. Slight staining and foxing to title page and a handful of interior pages. A couple of instances of marginal tick marks. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this rare issue of several of the 'lesser works' of Thomas a Kempis, author of The Imitation of Christ. OCLC (No. 490240637) locates only two copies at institutions worldwide - at Bibliotheque St. Genevieve in Paris and Universite de Lille in northern France. ~KMP~ [1.0P] A rare collection of several important spiritual works by Thomas a Kempis (circa 1380-1471), author of the devotional classic 'The Imitation of Christ,' in an influential edit by Jacob Merlo Horstius (1597-1644). Kempis, an Augustinian monk, priest, copyist and scholar, spent most of his long life at Mount Saint Agnes monastery, in the town of Windesheim, located in what is now the Netherlands. He wrote a large number of works for the instruction of novices of his Augustinian monastic order, followers of Geert Groote's Brethren of the Common Life, but over the years they became popular among the faithful worldwide. This collection includes 'Soliloquy of the Soul,' 'The Valley of Lilies,' 'The Three Tabernacles: Poverty, Humility and Patience,' 'True Compunction of the Heart' and more. Horstius, a Catholic theologian and priest in Cologne, Germany, wrote several ascetical works (including the widely printed and translated Paradise of the Christian Soul), and edited the works of Kempis.
