Two hand-colored folding engraved maps & one folding printed table. xvii pp., 1 leaf of errata, 597 pp. 8vo, cont. speckled calf, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: Printed by B. Macmillan for G. Nicol et al., 1798. First edition and rather scarce. Middleton (1751-1833), land surveyor and agriculturalist, was a member of the London Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce. The present work has long been considered to be the best of all of the Board of Agriculture's surveys of the English counties (see ODNB). Middleton was a prolific writer on rural matters and was inspired by a wish to improve the lot of his fellow countrymen. Fine copy.
