thant (b. 1909 in burma) was the third secretary-general of the united nations and first non-scandinavian to hold the position. he was in office from 1961 to 1971.

in his first term, thant facilitated the negotiations between the US and USSR during the Cuban Missile Crisis. his second term saw his public criticism of US conduct in the vietnam war and the entry of several newly independent African and Asian states into the UN.

thant's 1978 memoir chronicles his two terms as the UN secretary general.
