About This Item

London: R. Hunter et al., 1835. [6], 20pp. Recent blue paper boards, printed paper lettering piece to upper board. Slight wear to extremities, some discolouration to lettering-piece. Title and final page toned, marginal dust-soiling and light foxing throughout. A monograph delivered by Unitarian religious philosopher James Martineau (1805-1900) on the association between humanities notions of the divine, as gleaned through the heavens, and the scientific explanations afforded to the material world in the modern age; all done upon the focus of Halley's comet, visible in 1835 for the first time since 1759. Martineau seeks to persuade that the appearance of the comet may convey a deeper spiritual significance rather than being a mere curiosity of natural philosophy. . Second edition. 8vo in 4s.

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
