"This book is an important contribution to the knowledge of Algerian culture and, more particularly, of the social, cultural and political transformations of Berber groups during colonization and since independence. Tassadit Yacine-Titouh mobilizes two complementary resources here: anthropological surveys carried out in the field during the 1980s, and written documents (public and private archives) or oral documents (founding stories, tales and legends). These materials reveal the inextricable relationship between kinship structures and the transmission of power, and allow the author to offer an original analysis of their evolution since the 19th century. This approach leads to a double questioning, through which Tassadit Yacine-Titouh explores two burning problems of contemporary Algerian society: the importance in the ways of thinking of the historico-mythical substrate of Berber origin, largely hidden and denied by the official culture , and the uncomfortable place of Algerian intellectuals, constantly blocked in the exercise of their critical function by an authoritarian system that mobilizes traditional culture to impose its order."
