About This Item

Paris: Berquet et Petion, 1843. Second edition. Hardcover. Good + overall. As is, lacking Plates 16, 25 and 30. Lithographic plates include: whale hunting, Fiji, Antarctica, New Zealand, Singapore, Van Diemen's Land, and convict punishment in Hobart ("Punition des Matelots a Hobart Town", showing a prisoner in a metal mouse tumbler. The account of the second Dumont d'Urville expedition to Australia and New Zealand. This was the expedition which marked France's entry into the international competition of polar exploration, along with the Americans and British. The French king, Louis-Philippe ordered that Dumont D'Urville attempt to reach the south magnetic pole in order to claim it for France; or, at the very least, to venture as far as the southerly latitude reached by James Weddell in 1823.

In two volumes, with fine lithographs. 8vo, iv, 581pp; 583pp, publisher's ad plates present. Quarter black leather and dark blue pebbled cloth, with gilt title and rules at spine. Spine ends rubbed. Internally, previous owner book plate inside front cover, scattered foxing.
