Horace's Head, Fleet Street, London: Benjamin White, 1771. First English edition. Two volumes, 13 engraved plates (of which 11 are of plants), pp xx, 396; 367, (35), lacking the half-titles, a general age-toning throughout, a few very minor marginal tears, there is some marginal staining in the second volume which I would not call offensive, otherwise this is a very good wide-margined copy, uncut and unpressed; bound in a recent full panelled calf, blind-stamped, raised bands on the spines with a red labels, very good. [Osbeck (1723 - 1805) was a Swedish explorer, naturalist and an apostle of Carl Linnaeus. He was born in the parish of Hålanda on Västergötland and studied at Uppsala with Carolus Linnaeus. In 1750 - 1752 he travelled as chaplain on the ship Prins Carl to Asia where he spent four months studying the flora, fauna, and people of the Canton region of China. He returned home just in time to contribute more than 600 species of plant to Linnaeus' Species Plantarum, published in 1753. Ekeberg (1716 - 1784) was a Swedish physician, chemist and explorer. He made several voyages to the East Indies and China as a sea captain. He brought back reports of the tea tree and wrote a number of books. Trained as a pharmacist and chemist, Ekeberg started his career as a ship's doctor, and became an expert navigator. Between 1742 and 1778 he made ten trips to India and China, becoming a captain in 1750 for the Swedish East India Company. He brought back numerous natural history specimens from his voyages for Carl Linnaeus, with whom he had a close friendship, and was honoured by having the genus Ekebergia created.]. Description:
New York: The Century Co, 1908. A finely produced publication dedicated to the magic of the pearl, rarely found in such lovely original condition. Published in New York in 1908, this work is a splendid example of fine book production. Amongst much of interest, there is a long chapter on the Australian pearling industry: "As regards areas of distribution the most extensive pearl-oyster grounds of the world are situated on the northern and western coasts of Australia" the nude divers in the Australian pearl fisheries are mostly Malays and Australian aborigines." (Chapter IX). Large octavo, colour frontispiece and numerous black & white and coloured plates throughout; a very good copy in the original gilt-decorated cloth.

1792 Diderot Encyclopedia 89 Plates PRINTING PRESS Anvil Forges Marble WorkingThrough the mid-18th-century, large collections of knowledge were relegated to specific areas of study like law, medicine, or religion. However, Denis Diderot's 'Encyclopedie'
changed the public's knowledge base as well as setting a standard for future generations of acquiring knowledge on many different subjects. This was the first encyclopedia to include contributions from many different named writers. It also was the first encyclopedia to describe work-related topics like agriculture, engineering, cooking, and trade.
One of the aspects that made this work so desirable was the incredible, detailed full-page engravings. In fact, the illustrations themselves were so sought-after that they were of published on their own apart from the encyclopedia.
This volume of 'De Planches', or the plates from Diderot's encyclopedia include some of the following engravings:

1799 Romance of the Rose Lorris Medieval de Meun Flamel Alchemy STUNNING 5v"The more a man gazes on what he loves, the more he sets fire to his heart and bastes it with bacon fat."
― Guillaume de Lorris, The Romance of the Rose
The 'Roman de la Rose' is a famous 13th-century Medieval French poem written as an allegorical dream sequence. It was written by Guillaume de Lorris who sought to express the feelings of romantic love, sexuality, and chivalry. It was completed by Jean de Meung who continued the work begun by Lorris. Thought to be the most widely read book other than the Bible in the 13th- and 14th-centuries, it was highly influential on other authors, notably including Geoffrey Chaucer.
This absolutely stunning
18th-century edition was published in Paris printed in five beautiful vellum-bound volumes. This particular edition is of note, not just for containing the 'Roman de la Rose', but also a preface by Clement Marot, Meung's 'Life of Jean Clopinel', a short treatise on the alchemy of… Read More

1696 1ed John Sergeant Method to Science Philosophy John Locke Descartes IdeismJohn Sergeant was a 17th-century Catholic priest known for his controversial treatises. One such work was 'The Method to Science', a philosophical work written to object against John Locke. According to Hutton,
"Sergeant's critique of Locke was part of a more wide-ranging critique of what he called 'ideists', a category which yokes Descartes and Locke together. He targets Locke in his 'The Method to Science' [and] his principal objection to Locke's epistemology was its implicit skepticism. he charged Locke that his natural philosophy failed to provide universal conclusions or maxims".
