About This Item

London: John Murray, 1820. Hardcover. Near fine. The third edition. 8vo. (6),339,(1)pp. Engraved frontispiece of Sir Murray Maxwell, the captain of the Alceste. Illustrated with six handcolored full page plates. Folding engraved map of the Eastern and Yellow Seas is present. Nicely bound to style in half brown morocco, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, tooled in blind, and with a red morocco lettering label, gilt.


The map has had a short repair to a closed separation at one of the folds else is near fine. There is occasionally very light foxing and fingering else this is a near fine copy in a fine binding.


The author was the ship's surgeon. The plates include as subjects a Lewchew (Loochoo) Chief, and a Corean (Korean) chief, Fort Maxwell, a Temple Garden at Lewchow and Islanders from Sir James Hall's Group.
