London: H. Whitridge, 1748. Hardcover. very good. 1st edition. xxviii,1-96,89-336.pp. Octavo. Nine plates including five folding. One large folding map as frontis. Bound in original full red polished calf re-backed with a new lighter calf spine. Text generally very clean. Endpapers a bit soiled. A pleasing copy. Streeter 3642; Sabin 22312; Not in Arctic Bibl.. Ellis was sent on this voyage as an agent for Arthur Dobbs to find the northwest passage and to prove Captain Middleton, who had made an earlier voyage for the same purpose, wrong is his contention that no such passage existed from Hudson's Bay. Ellis was also unable to find a passage, but he and Dobbs continued to believe in its existence. Part of the famous Dobbs-Middleton controversy which continued in print for several years. 1748
