Paris. Handsomely bound in quarter leather over marbled boards. ND (c.1866). hb. Small 4to pp. 467. Published by the Bibliotheque d'Education et Recreation (J. Hetzel, Editeur). . Verne's third novel, first published by Jules Hetzel in 1864, with the first English Translation ("The Adventures of Captain Hatteras") coming in 1874. It is an adventure story in two parts: The English at the North Pole (Les Anglais au pole nord) and The Desert of Ice (Le Desert de glace). The theme and locale are particularly interesting because Captain Hatteras shows many similarities to the doomed Arctic explorer, Sir John Franklin. The boards of our copy show some rubbing to the extremities. The joints and hinges are tight. Small, early, oval rubber stamp on the title page of Georges Lucas, below which, on the bottom margin, is a more recent ink name with the notation "Paris, April 24, 1966". No other markings to text. Occasional foxing to contents, which are otherwise clean, tight, and bright. Overall, a good plus, to very good, copy. .

Dijon: sn, 1791. Livre. Bon. Couverture souple.

Paris, Ed. de La Revue Blanche, 1902, 12mo, pp. 302; contemporary red half leather binding (signed: P. Dayre), with marbled boards, top edge gilt; both orig. wrappers, in good condition, are bound in. - Pierre Bonnard designed the front-cover with a watercolour drawing. - Text-pages browned (as always), and otherwise a very attractive copy. - First edition of the novel, d'un libertinage élégant, set in the 18th century, in Touraine, where Boylesve grew up. The book became, in the first half of the 20th century, one of the most illustrated French literary texts. - This copy has the mention cinquième mille at the base of the front-cover, but note that in the same year of its publication, 1902, the Editions de La Revue Blanche closed down, and its stock was taken over by the publisher Eugène Fasquelle. Future editions were not similar.
