London: William Miller, 1809. First Edition. Hardcover. Armorial bookplate on the front pastedowns and a modern, tasteful bookplate on the front endpapers of each volume. Sporadic foxing, some plates with offsetting from the text, bindings firm and Fine. Overall a Near Fine example. Three quarto (9" x 11-1/2") volumes in contemporary mottled calf leather with gilt rules, marbled endpapers and edges, rebacked recently and sympathetically with black morocco spine labels and gilt lettering. A Large Paper copy illustrated with 3 engraved vignettes and 69 engraved plates including 11 folding, 7 of which are maps, 2 of which are large maps of the Red Sea area. The illustrations are based on drawings by Henry Salt who accompanied Annesley on his voyage. The first volume deals with India and Sri Lanka, with sections on Benares, Calcutta, and Lucknow. Volumes two and three cover Abyssinia, Egypt and the Red Sea, including Mocha and Jeddah. Abbey, Travel 515.

Brunet V, 1034; 138; Mendelssohn 1, 73) First edition.The Right Honourable George Annesley, better known as Lord Valentia, the title from his youth, Annesley, travelled widely and collected plants from India and other parts of the world he visited. He established a ten-acre arboretum in the grounds of Arley Castle, Upper Arley, Worcestershire, England in the first half of the 19th century. He also commissioned the remodeling of the house into an asymmetrical Gothic castle, completed in 1844, the year of his death. Annesley died, aged seventy four in 1844. He was a fellow of the Royal Society (1796) and the Literary Society (1796).
