About This Item

New York, (1971): Burt Franklin. Octavo. cii, 62 pages, index, folding maps of Greenland, the Faeroe Islands, the southwest coast of Greenland, and finally a nice facsimile copy of their original navigational map. Towards the close of the fourteenth century Niccoli Zeno, a member of one of the noblest and most ancient families in Venice, went, at his own expense, on a voyage, rather of curiosity than discovery, into the northern seas. In his next voyage, his brother Antonio joined him and they sailed widely, actually touching the shores of north America a century before the events at the end of the 15th century with Columbus and the early exploration of America. A very important account of early travels that deal with the discoveries of north America before the traditional dates beginning with 1492. BOund in blue cloth, spine lettering gilt. A handsome nera fine copy.
