Inscription reads, 'Alfred Wareing/Savage Club/London Sep 26th 30/and - on Saturday 8th Nov 30-/to his dear daughter/Margherita Anna Henley Wareing/- with his devoted Love/Alfred Wareing'. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece. A well-researched and authoritative biography of English poet, critic and editor of literary magazines and journals William Ernest Henley (1849-1903). Alfred Wareing (1876-1942) was a theatrical producer, and In the author's Preface to this book, the author Kennedy Williamson, acknowledges 'valuable help' to Wareing (and others) in writing the book. In the Index there are a number of references to Alfred Wareing. From the age of twelve, Henley suffered for tuberculosis of the bone that resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee. His appearance was the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson for the character of Long John Silver. In a letter to Henley after publication of 'Treasure Island', Stevenson wrote 'I will now make a confession. It was the sight of your maimed strength and masterfulness that begot Long John Silver'.
