London: Harold Shaylor, 1930. VG. First edition, first printing. NO d/w, now protected in an archival, acetate, clear, detachable, non-adhesive d/w. ALFRED WAREING'S COPY, WITH HIS SIGNATURE, AND PRESENTED TO HIS DAUGHTER, inscription on front endpaper. Inscription reads, 'Alfred Wareing/Savage Club/London Sep 26th 30/and - on Saturday 8th Nov 30-/to his dear daughter/Margherita Anna Henley Wareing/- with his devoted Love/Alfred Wareing'. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece. A well-researched and authoritative biography of English poet, critic and editor of literary magazines and journals William Ernest Henley (1849-1903). Alfred Wareing (1876-1942) was a theatrical producer, and In the author's Preface to this book, the author Kennedy Williamson, acknowledges 'valuable help' to Wareing (and others) in writing the book. In the Index there are a number of references to Alfred Wareing. From the age of twelve, Henley suffered for tuberculosis of the bone that resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee. His appearance was the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson for the character of Long John Silver. In a letter to Henley after publication of 'Treasure Island', Stevenson wrote 'I will now make a confession. It was the sight of your maimed strength and masterfulness that begot Long John Silver'. With Bibliography and Index. Dusting to top-edge; spotting to all edges; some occasional spotting to pages throughout; age tanning to spine which has a small narrow (1mm by 5mm) scuff; some chipping and loss of cloth to head and tail of spine; minor rubbing to bottom corner of front board; else a very good copy of a UNIQUE ASSOCIATION COPY FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING SIGNED BY ALFRED WAREING.. Clean pages with noticeable tanning and foxing throughout. More pronounced to free endpapers and pastedowns. Pencil markings to front free endpaper. Pencil annotations and marginalia to a few pages. Binding remains firm. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Gilt lettering is darkened. Moderate sunning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Moderate splits to spine ends and corners causing cloth to be frayed. Visible wear and water marks to boards.
