London: Faber & Faber 1956. 8vo. First English Edition. 94 pp. Yellow hardback in black & white pictorial jacket, not price clipped. Lightly rubbed to spine ends and extremities, a few small tears around edges. Small marks to panels. Slight darkening to top of back board, otherwise boards clean. Offsetting to endpapers and a W. S. Kennedy bookplate, designed by Thomas Sturge-Moore, to front pastedown; otherwise internally clean. With a publisher's note on page 5 explaining that the play text is that used in the transferred English production at the Criterion Theatre - censored by the Lord Chamberlain. Also included are some contemporary newspaper clippings from the Times Literary Supplement immediately after this first edition was published, offering some different interpretations of the play in letters to the editor, including one from William Empson. Viewers and readers might find references to religion, war, the philosophical and psychoanalytical in its extremely pared back style. One of the most written about and performed plays of the 20th century, ' Waiting for Godot' is a paramount example of the Theatre of the Absurd. . Very Good. Hardcover. First English Edition. 1956.
Synopsis
Beckett's existentialist play portrays two men who are trapped in endless waiting for the arrival of someone named Godot. They spend their time bantering and conjecturing and trying to anticipate the time and method of arrival. "Nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes, it's awful?"
