The term Waler for a horse from NSW was first coined in India in 1846, and these horses were soon winning prizes on the Indian turf, carrying dragoons and troopers in the disputed borders of Queen Victoria's empire. Many will know them as the horses ridden in the legendary charge by the Light Horse at Bershaba but most will be amazed at the extent of the Waler trade numbering in the tens of thousands. The auhtor recounts for the first time the history of the Walers, their use as army remounts in India, the Middle East and southern Africa, and their use as sporting horses.
