Author Max S. Thomas blends "facts, a little fiction and history" into this interesting and scarce chronicle/songbook of life in the Walnut Knob Mountain area of Virgina. Through the points of view of four narrators—a grandmother with pilgrim ancestors, an elderly man who lived through the Civil War, a farmer who experienced the turn of the century and WWI, and Uncle Joe Ward, who describes life on the mountain from the 1920s to the 1970s. The second half of the book contains traditional mountain songs with lyrics and simple notation.
