Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4) bound in original publisher's quarter brown cloth with gilt lettering to sine over brown boards with title to cover in original pictorial jacket. First edition. A detailed reconstruction of Whitman's life and times considers the poet's years of apprenticeship on New York newspapers, his experiences in the Civil War, and his lifetime devotion to the writing and reworking of Leaves of Grass. Condition: Underlining with marginalia throughout, previous owner's name, William Burford, the poet, to half title. Jacket with light edge wear else about very good in a near fine jacket.
