About This Item

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1999. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Fine. A collection of essays about McMurtry's early years in the small town of Archer City, Texas; and of his experiences as a reader, a writer and a bookseller. First edition, first printing (with commplete numberline). About 5 3/4 x 8 3/8 inches, 204 pages in tan paper-covered boards with blue backstrip and gold lettering on spine. Both panels of the dustjacket show a color photo of a Dairy Queen along a stretch of dusty two-lane rural highway. Title is in black lettering, author in white with same black and white lettering on spine. A black& white photo of McMurtry is on the back fold. Boards and text are in "as new" condition with no noticeable flaws or damage. No markings of any kind, no underlining, highlighting or marginal notes. Clean, complete. The dj has been price-clipped, o/w it is also in very fine condition. A review of the book, by Thomas Mallon, apparently clipped from the Nov. 21, 1999, NY Times Review of Books, is laid-in. Mallon notes that "Despite McMurtry's insistence that this new book is intended as autobiography, it reads tantalizingly like the notes toward one."
