About This Item

Boston - Toronto: Little, Brown and Company, 1966. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+/Very Good. Signed by Author(s). Inscribed by author on front free endpaper. Stated First Edition. Blue cloth stamped in dark blue. Head of spine bumped; minor wear at corners. Interior is clean. Dust jacket has some minor chipping at spine ends and corners; slight soiling on rear panel; general edgewear; price clipped; in an archival mylar sleeve. Color illustrations throughout. 32 pages. 10 x 7.5 inches. A touching and true story of Old Abe, one of the most famous American Bald Eagles and a Wisconsin Civil War icon. Old Abe (named after President Lincoln) accompanied the 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment, carried into battles and skirmishes on a special perch, and saw action across Missouri, Mississippi and Louisiana. Of this great bird, Confederate General Sterling Price remarked, ''that bird must be captured or killed at all hazards, I would rather get that eagle than capture a whole brigade or a dozen battle flags.'' Old Abe's story began in 1861 when, still just an eaglet, he was captured by an Indian and then sold to the militia known as the Eau Claire Badgers (later incorporated into the Eighth Wisconsin). Old Abe survived the war and lived until 1881.
