Beernink (1939 - 1969), founder of a local chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility. Poems from a physician sensitive towards his patients and whose own life was cut short by leukemia, diagnosed but a year after receiving his medical degree from Stanford (1965). Poems penned during the enforced leisure of his illness. On gout in Morton Stump, "Your queen to be cushioned in fine silk pillows/ .../ For she has caused a proud man to weep/ She has caused a sane man to babble in delerium/ And she has caused a strong man to tremble with pain/ You hot, red, swollen, throbbing, hairy, left great toe". that he wrote his poetry: "This was a time when my patients reappeared to me and I lived again in my mind all the many emotions we experienced together. 2nd Edition.
