Hugh Murton Le Fleming was born in 1902. He was a pupil under C.B. Collett at the Great Western Railway Works at Swindon from 1923 to 1925. He obtained the post of Assistant Supply Officer in the Admiralty, being promoted later to Production Engineer. During the war his work concerned warships and their armament. Hugh Le Fleming's writings during this final period included a large number of books on ships, such as Warships of World War I, concise histories of the ships of the Blue Funnel and Holland America Lines and 44 editions of the Ian Allan ABC series.
