Uniform edition; 4 1/2 x 6 3/4; pp. [6], 5-268, [4]; cloth over boards illustrated in red and black; some dust-dulling and spotting to back cover; few small rubbed spots to edges and tips of spine; age-toning to endpapers only, else mostly very clean; chromolithographed frontis; numerous b&w plates and in-line engravings; overall in very good condition. A beautiful edition of this children's novel written partly as a moral fable and partly as a satire supporting Charles Darwin's "The Origin of Species." Though initially extremely popular, the book later lost some of its popularity due to its insulting references towards Jews, Americans, blacks, and the Irish.
