First edition of this scarce installment in Henry Clews’s Weekly Financial Review subscribed to by industrialists, investors, and businessmen across the United States during the Progressive Era. The column written by Clews was issued before notice of President McKinley’s death resulting from gangrene and sepsis from bullet wounds after having been shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. NY Sept. 6, 1901. In this column he virulently denounces anarchism, and that the “attempt to kill the President was much less than might have been expected.” Clews (1836-1923) was the second largest marketer of Federal bonds during the Civil War, organized the Committee of 70, and deposed the corrupt Boss Tweed Ring in New York, and served as financial consultant to President Grant.
