About This Item

New York: Franklin Watts, Inc., 1960. First US Edition/First Printing. Hardcover. Fair/Poor. A scarce First US Edition of the first book in the author's beloved Tales of Alderley series that dropped the ""of Brisingamen"" from the title for the US market. An ex-library copy rebound in pale blue patterned cloth with tape scars to tops and bottoms of boards and soiling at spine ends. Discard stamps and notes in pencil to front endpapers wth top corner of ffep cut off. Bottom corner issing to half-title page and taped over. Text portions of jacket flaps cut out and affixed to page opposite title page which has embossed stamp. Some notes to copyright page. Copyright 1960 stated and "First Published in the United States by Franklin Watts, Inc" - so assumed first edition and printing as this publisher had no consistent statement. Pocket to rfep with Discard and date stamps to same and another stamp with paper scar to rear pastedown. A couple notes to last page. Stains to several pages and soling to page ends. Jacket has aforementioned texts cut from flaps which are also cut down, tearing towards top of spine with small chip. Jacket is also slightly taller than book - so likely text block may have been trimmed when rebound. Small chip to head of spine and tears (1 inch and 1/2 inch) to bottom of spine. Sticker shadow to bottom of spine and tape reinforcement to same and bottom corners on inside. Some more small chips and short tears to front corners, top of front panel, head of spine and top rear corner. Stain to rear panel. General creasing.
