About This Item
University of Toronto Medical Journal; 1932. Reprint (first separate publication) from the University of Toronto Medical Journal, February 1932. Stapled wraps, 9 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches, unpaginated (8 pp). Very good. Rare (no OCLC library holdings). Klotz was a professor in the Department of Pathology and Bacteriology at the University of Toronto. "Closely allied to the belief in the ju-ju charm is belief in the powers of certain individuals or groups of individuals, who stand at the head of peculiar cults and secret societies: the smallpox cult, the lighting cult, the alligator society, the leopard society and many others. He found that the head of the organization knew something about smallpox and taught the people to avoid vaccination. On the other hand, this priest, deeply pock-marked himself, collected pus from active cases of smallpox, stored it in small vials and kept it in a cool, dark place. If in his opinion the community had been peaceful for too long, or if some political or other problem gave rise to dissension, he would undertake to get a smallpox epidemic under way. At other times he spoke as the oracle of the gods, and would then prophecy some calamity. Having the equipment for such a calamity at hand gave him great power. The raging of a smallpox epidemic in a native town is worth riches to the ju-ju men, who act both as herbalists and charm doctors." (3214003). F. Soft cover.
