About This Item
New York:: Bonanza Books, 1968.. Reprint Edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: paper covered boards with cloth at the spine; a Near Fine book, with a Very Good+ dust jacket.. Small 4to (about 10.5 inches tall) . Index to photographs. Description: Illustrated with nearly 300 historic photographs. This book examines the role of the wooden schooners and four-masters in the settling of the West Coast. The early settlers in California, Oregon and Washington came around the Horn and sailed north from San Francisco. Lumber for homes and industry went south by sea from the Northwest. And with nothing to guide them but the wind, compass, sextant, stars and a sixth sense, the sturdy little ships struggled through fog and gales, more than half of them foundering. This is the story of those ships and the pioneers who built them. An appendix provides the names of the Windjammers built on the West coast, the builders, the date, the place, their rigging, tonnage and final fate. This was originally published by Superior Publishing; this Bonanza edition is a reprint.
