About This Item

(London: International African Institute, 1962). Ethnographic Survey of Africa, edited by Daryll Forde. East Central Africa Part XIII. 240 x 164 mm; printed wrappers; pp. 159; maps, incl. one folding at end. Wrappers slightly creased and worn, with archival tape repair to head of spine; lower hinge tender, with archival tape strengthening. "The Western or Central Interlacustrine Bantu live in a crescent-shaped area some 520 miles from north to south, and 75 miles from east to west, in western and south-western Uganda, and in the north-western corner of Tanganyika. The area extends from the Somerset Nile, east of Lake Albert some 220 miles south-west past the Ruwenzori mountains to Lake Edward and then about 100 miles south to the Mufumbiro (Birunga) volcanoes. Most of this section lies above 4,500 feet on the higher parts of the plateau and is bordered by the Western Rift Valley. The area continues east and south-eastwards for 200 miles beyond the Kagera river and around the south-west corner of Lake Victoria." .
