First edition. The play opened on March 5, 1969 at The Queen's Theatre in London. The cast included Ralph Richardson, Coral Browne, Stanley Baxter, Julia Foster, Peter Bayliss, and Hayward Morse. It was directed by Robert Chetwyn.
