New York: George P. Putnam & Co., , 1854. First Edition, first issue. Beautifully illustrated with 20 chromolithograph plates, 15 of birds by Mrs. Webber, and 5 of Native American scenes by the great early Western artists, Alfred Jacob Miller. Miller's works are very scarce in chromolithograph format. The plate of Indian Girl Swinging shows her bare-breasted as called for in the first issue (in later printings she has been provided a blouse). Large octavo (binding is approximately 7 inches wide and 10 inches tall). In the scarce publisher's full black Morocco, highly decorated in gilt on both the front and back covers and the spine. Both covers have a large depressed lozenge with a gilt bird in the center. Very scarce in the deluxe Morocco binding. Near fine with light edge wear.
