About This Item

William Lloyd Garrison's. Thompson's Lectures and Debates on Slavery, With a Full Report of the Discussion Between Mr. Thompson and Mr. Borthwick, the Pro-Slavery Agent, Also A Brief History of His Connection With the Anti-Slavery Cause in England.Isaac Knapp, Boston: 1836., 1836. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 190 pages. Bound in the original full brown patterned muslin cloth, with gold lettering on the front board. 12mo. Slight foxing. First American Edition. Written by the leader of the American abolition movement, this book give an account of a series of debates between Thompson (1804-1878) and Peter Borthwick (1804-1852), an advocate of slavery, in Liverpool, in 1833. Garrison (1805-1879) represented the New England Anti-Slavery Society at that event. It includes a history of Thompson's association with the anti-slavery movement in England. This book is also an early example of an American gold-stamped cloth binding.

George Thompson was one of the most important abolitionists and human rights lecturers. Yet during the term of Thompson's lectures, the word "Abolitionist" was not a friendly one. Many concerned Americans recognized the issues inherent in slavery, but feared lumping themselves in with rally-rousers, abolitionists, or often simply 'those kind.' Despite this, Thompson's speeches went a long way toward imbuing a sense of pride to those who would fight against slavery. Within this volume, and in his speeches, he and Garrison say, in part: "Tho' now by / Slavery's minions missed /And covered o'er with shame/It is a spell of right and power --/A watchword of the free; /Who spurns it in the trial hour, /A craven soul is he.
