About This Item

The Detective Book Club produced volumes of three crime novels from 1942 to 1999. Originally monthly, near the end they dwindled down to just a few per year. Many famous detective and crime novelists had their early works featured in DBC editions. Often, books were published in DBC editions before, or at the same time as they were published in mass market form. A little about our authors:

John Gardner: After Ian Fleming, Garnder took up the mantle of continuing the James Bond series, contributing numbers 16 through 29. (The Bond franchise is still progressing having reached #40 with five additional contributing authors.) At the same time, Gardner was still working on his own ideas, producing two collections of short stories, twelve stand alone novels and twenty four novels across five series. Gardner fied in 2007. This is the 23rd Bond novel, eighth by Gardner.

Anne Morice: Morice wrote 25 mysteries, 23 in her Tessa Crichton series, and two in her Tubby Wiseman series, which ended with her death in 1989. Thisis the twenty third and final Tessa Crichton novel.

H. R. F. Keating: British detective writer of 55 novels, including the Inspector Ghote series (26) and the Harriot Marten series (7). This is the seventeenth Inspector Ghote novel.

Synopsis

Win, Lose or Die, first published in 1989, was the eighth novel by John Gardner featuring Ian Fleming's secret agent, James Bond. Carrying the Glidrose Publications copyright, it was first published in the United Kingdom by Hodder and Stoughton and in the United States by Putnam. Beginning with this novel, and continuing for the remainder of the John Gardner series, Bond is promoted to the Royal Navy rank of Captain.
